teli starts marketing B/W Camera featuring IEEE1394 I/F for machine vision use.

In March 2003, Tokyo Electronic Industry Co., Ltd. (hereafter called Teli) of which the president is Hiroshi Takaoka starts marketing CS8550DiF, double-speed scan full frame camera featuring IEEE1394. This camera improves an affinity of PC and peripheral equipment by IEEE1394 interface. CS8550DiF is added to our lineup as a new product of double-speed full frame camera, CS8550D series, which have been gained popularity so far.
This new model improves an affinity of PC and peripheral equipment by featuring IEEE1394 interface. Achieving an ultra compact and lightweight body (49 x 35 x 98mm, approx. 210g) enables to mount to industrial equipments and image processing machines easily.

CS8550DiF employs a 1/3 type CCD having 330,000 pixels. Its square grid pattern array is suitable to image processing.
This model achieves high-speed video output at 60fps, which is equivalent to twice as fast as in EIA system.


Tips and background of development

1. Interface

There are 2 methods of system, digital and analog as interface for image processing camera now.
Digital system includes: Camera Link, EIA-644, USB, RS422 and IEEE1394 featured to CS8550DiF. IEEE1394 is employed to various equipments other than PC and peripheral equipments.
It provides IIDC1394based Digital Camera Specification as a protocol for industrial camera.
IEEE1394 include the following features:
- As IEEE1394 is not a single interface between a camera and an image processing device, it is available on the networks of multiple IEEE1394 equipments.
- IEEE1394 can be achieved save the cost because it doesn't need the exclusive frame gabber board and so on.

2. High-frame rate

Conventionally, many general-purpose cameras for machine vision use employ a standard TV format such like EIA system or CCIR system due to the cost. However, for example in EIA system, an interval to output is needed 33.3ms at 30fps per image screen. Not to be able to cut the interval becomes difficulty to cut cycle time of the image processing, and by extension to the equipment as a whole. The performance speed, which is twice as fast as conventional models, achieves the high-speed image output at 60fps. Therefore, CS8550DiF is adaptable to the needs for speedup of image processing

Features

  • IEEE1394 I/F

    This camera adopts IEEE1394 Interface to connect to image processing devices and PC. It conforms to IIDC 1394based Digital Camera Specification Ver1.3, which is a protocol for industrial camera. The data transmission is operated at 400Mbps. And this camera can output an image of VGA size (640 x 480) in non-compression condition at 60fps, which is equivalent to twice as fast as in EIA system.
  • This model employs CCD with all pixels' data readout function and square grid pattern array.

    Even under shutter operation, all pixels' data are read out. And a clear image in high resolution can be obtained without a deterioration of the vertical resolution. As CCD's pixels are arranged in square grid pattern, CS8550DiF can operate easy computation and an image processing without aspect ratio correction.
  • Ultra compact and lightweight body

    This model is integrated type having small and lightweight body (49 x 35 x 98mm, approx. 210g). C-mount is employed as lens mount.
  • Random trigger shutter function

    CS8550DiF can capture images at any given timing cued by external signal and can obtain a stationary image easily.
