Toshiba Teli participated in the Optics & Photonics International Exhibition 2021 (OPIE ‘21) held over three days at PACIFICO Yokohama from June 30 (Wed.) to July 2 (Fri.). We showcased two models of industrial cameras with a USB3 interface.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for all the people who visited our booth.

Descriptions

① C-mount camera with Gen-4 24.5MP Pregius S; BU2409MG (new product)

One of our exhibits was the BU2409MG monochrome camera incorporating the Gen-4 24.47-million-pixel (24.5MP) Pregius backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor from Sony Corporation. For the purpose of demonstration, we compared two images captured simultaneously using RGB (white) and near-infrared (NIR) light sources.

The BU2409MG has an extended spectral sensitivity range from less than 400 nm to more than 1000 nm, making it possible to capture images that appear differently depending on the wavelength.

First, we demonstrated that the BU2409MG provides an image of a subject (postal stamp) that is clear in every detail because of its 24.5MP resolution.

② RGB/NIR 5MP CMOS camera (pre-launch exhibit)

Our second exhibit was an RGB/NIR camera with a 5.33-million-pixel (5.3MP) CMOS image sensor capable of capturing RGB and NIR light simultaneously.

First, we showed that the RGB image shown at left can be used for the visual inspection of printed matter (a postal stamp in this case) while demonstrating simultaneously that an NIR image makes it possible to inspect an invisible film on the backside of printing as well as scratches on the paper backing because the NIR light makes part of the ink appear transparent.
For example, an RGB light passes through transparent liquids, but not dark liquids such as coffee. Therefore, an image of a dark liquid appears dark when it is shot using an RGB spectrum. In contrast, an NIR light makes its contents highly observable since it passes through a dark liquid.

Unlike the BU2409MG with a wide spectral sensitivity range, this RGB/NIR camera incorporates an image sensor in which a pixel of the color filter array is allocated to the NIR region. Therefore, the RGB/NIR camera can capture both RGB and NIR images simultaneously. This makes it possible to obtain both normal and special images more accurately than is possible using two cameras. The RGB/NIR camera helps reduce the size and improve the accuracy of imaging systems.

Application examples: Alignment adjustment using an RGB image, real-time machining inspection using an NIR image
